Babysitting

For many young people a write of passage is when you are now at an age where you no longer need a babysitter and are old enough to become that babysitter. Babysitting is an opportunity to  earn that extra cash that every teenager can use. Some teens are ready for this responsibility and take to it naturally, while others kids are a little more cautious, uncomfortable, and maybe even a little nauseated at the thought.

New to babysitting there is much you can do to become more comfortable and help things go smoother.

1. If asked to babysit particularly if the child is a baby, consider asking if you can first spend some unhurried time with the child and parent so you can learn the baby’s routine. Don’t try to do any training  just prior to the time you are expected to babysit as the parents will be rushing around trying to get ready to leave.

2. Some babysitters get very alarmed when babies cry, spit up, have strange colored BMs, or refuse more than two bites of their strained carrots. Ask the parent to explain ahead of time the usual quirks of  their baby so you will understand what’s currently normal in the child’s world.

3. Young babysitters are often not as attentive as the parent. You must understand that you are being given a very important adult type responsibility and take that responsibility seriously. Ask the parents to help minimize any potential “risks” you see by closing doors, putting up the baby gates and not leaving things out or on the floor that could pose a choking risk.

4. Ask the parents to explain to you and either take notes or ask the parents to give you a note that you can refer to later as to their expectations and anything special you need to be aware of. If the parents expect things to be done on a particular time line ask them to write this down or take your own notes.

5. The first time you babysit a child you have not taken care of before it is best to do it only for a few hours and make sure you have a contact phone number for the parents.

6. If you have a cellphone add the parents contact numbers to it. Ask if you can call or text them if you have any questions.

7. Babies and young children have short attention spans and require constant attention and they generally aren’t that good at entertaining themselves for longer than 3 minutes. Change toys, change rooms, change positions, change the channel.

8. Don’t invite your friends over to the house where you are babysitting and don’t neglect your responsibilities by spending your time on the computer or cellphone instead of caring for the child. As you should easily recall from your own childhood experiences it only takes a few minutes out of your sight for something to potentially go wrong.

You may have younger siblings and therefore have some practice or perhaps you have never been around someone under 2 1/2 feet tall. But once you  get instruction and encouragement and some practice under your belt you just might find yourself being that preferred babysitter for the next several years.

Writing a Scholarship Winning Essay

Scholarships are  like money in the bank. Writing the scholarship essay is a critical step in the scholarship application process because it helps establish why a particular applicant is deserving of the money. Other scholarship criterion such as a high SAT score and a solid GPA, while still valuable, do not personalize the scholarship application like the essay does, as the essay appeals to the emotional aspect of one’s psyche. For this reason it is important that the scholarship essay is clear, concise and well-written.

So how does one go about creating a masterpiece scholarship essay? Well, the very first step would involve one absolving themselves of the notion that only those with talent have the ability to write well. If a person can talk they can write. However, because writing does involve a little bit more thinking than regular talking, it is important to follow a few guidelines during the writing process. These guidelines are detailed below:

1) Read other scholarship essays

Reading other winning scholarship essays is the best way to get a feel for what scholarship judges are looking for. It may also help provide ideas during times of writer’s block. Be careful, however, not to copy other people’s words unless they are properly quoted in the scholarship essay. This applies for both direct quotes and paraphrased statements.

2) Use outlines and brainstorm

Outlines are a great tool for a writer to get their thoughts together. A traditional outline format consists of a Roman numeral identifying the main heading, a capital letter identifying a subheading and numbers indicating topics under the subheading. Further points related to these topics can be denoted using small letters. Of course, for the scholarship essay an informal outline could work just as well… all that really matters is that the writer is aware of what they want to say before they actually start saying it.

3) Don’t be afraid of research

Some scholarship essays seem so essay… so why does a writer still encounter mental roadblocks when starting their piece? This is perfectly natural even on topics that one feels they are knowledgeable of. To get the brain cells functioning again, sometimes researching on topics directly and indirectly related to the main topic is helpful.

4) Write from the heart

Don’t try to sound like the latest best-selling author when writing the scholarship essay. This includes trying to sound ‘deep’, (unless of course ‘deep’ is one’s natural writing style), and littering the essay with big words. Scholarship judges can see through this and are usually turned off if they feel an essayist is trying to sound like someone else.

5) Be creative

As long as creativity doesn’t distract from the main theme of the scholarship essay, and assuming one is still using proper grammar, don’t be afraid to deviate from the ‘academic style.’ Believe it or not scholarship judges are human and tend to notice essays that touch their emotions in some way. Anecdotes, emotional personal accounts and even dialogues are creative approaches that have been used in winning scholarship essays. If the scholarship essay instructions allow for creative expression, go wild with it.

6) Use proper grammar and punctuation

Scholarship essays full of grammatical errors are the first to be disqualified even if the content is otherwise compelling. Therefore it is important that an essayist is fully aware of the rules of English grammar and writes in a formal manner. This means that when it comes to choosing to write a sentence with a traditional structure versus a ‘contemporary’ one, the writer should opt for the former. For example, even though it has recently become acceptable to use and or but at the beginning of a sentence, it should be avoided when writing the scholarship essay. There are still a lot of editors that feel uncomfortable with the idea of using a conjunction at the beginning of a sentence, so why even take the chance? A writer can never lose when choosing to write traditionally.

7) Use a standard essay format

A basic essay format consists of a thesis statement, three or four paragraphs expanding on points detailed in the thesis statement and a concluding paragraph. This traditional structure, despite being seen as generic by some writers, works very well. Why? Because it allows the essayist to clearly lay out their thoughts both for themselves during the writing process and for the judges who are reading the essay. This is an important factor when creating the scholarship essay, particularly for inexperienced writers who may have trouble clearly expressing the ‘main point’ in a non-traditional approach.

8) Follow the scholarship essay’s instructions

It is important that the scholarship essay addresses the points asked for in the instructions. No matter how brilliant a particular piece is, if it goes off on a tangent discussing irrelevant topics then it has not achieved the desired objective.

9) Get someone else to proofread your work

It is very easy for writers to not catch all of their mistakes, whether they are grammatical errors, typos or inconsistencies in the ‘logic’ of their piece. This is why it is important for everyone, even those who have previously written winning scholarship essays, to get their work proofread by a variety of sources.

10) Don’t get discouraged by ‘losing’ scholarship essays

Just because a scholarship essay didn’t win doesn’t necessarily mean that it was bad. Keep in mind that scholarship judges are responsible for reading hundreds sometimes even thousands of scholarship essays. Deciding who will win, particularly when there are so many good essays to choose from can be very difficult. Sometimes the final choice will be based purely on emotion… the judge may see factors in an essay that reminds them of their personal life. Either way, it is impossible to please everyone. This is why it is important to apply to as many scholarships as possible. As long as a person follows these guidelines and produces a well-written essay, the power of numbers shall be on their side. Good scholarship essays are bound to get noticed eventually.

Use Your Drawing Skills To Make Money

Whether you love drawing figures or you have a real eye for drawing still life pieces, you will find that there are a number of ways for you to make money from your drawing skills. While keeping in mind that art can be competitive business, and that there are always going to be people out there who are more experienced than you are, you’ll find that it is possible to make cash from your skill. This can tell you a lot about whether you want to do art later in life and to what extent you may want to make it your career.

When you are thinking about making money with your art skills, the first thing that you are going to have to think about is getting online. If you do not work solely in digital media, you are going to need a scanner. Consider getting one that is used and still in good shape. This is where you can begin the search for art jobs, and where you can start learning a little it more about the field itself. Take a look at forums that like to draw the same things that you do and figure out what the other artists’ work is like. It is always important to figure out what is out there and how your work stacks up.

When you are looking for illustrating jobs, make sure that you check out places that will talk about freelancer jobs. Whether or not these are over your head is something that is completely reliant on your skill, but this can show you what jobs are out there. You can get jobs for everything from newsletters that need clip art to gaming books that need black and white line art.

If you are just getting started with trying to get money from your drawing skills, however, you may want to start with commissions. Essentially, commissions are pieces where people tell you what they want and then you draw it for them. Compare this with working on spec, which is short for speculation. When you work on spec, you are creating work and sending it out to people who may have sent out a call for content. You can be more creative when you are working on spec, but if you have been commissioned, you can be sure that you are getting money.

One great way to tiptoe into making money online is to put up a gallery. When you have work out there that other people can see and comment on, you’ll be able to point prospective clients to it if they want to see what you can do. There is a lot of free hosting out there, and when you joint a community of other artists, it’s a great way to trade tips and to really enjoy yourself.

Take some time to think about how you can make money from your drawing skills. There are lots of opportunities out there, so make sure that you keep yourself open to them.

Selling Kids Items on eBay

As kids and teens we out grow our clothing and tire of games and toys that often build up in the corner of our room or in the closet. Why not discuss with your parents the idea of selling these things on eBay. Some people are making a living by selling kid related items on eBay so with your parents help in setting up an supervising an account you have an excellent chance of picking up some extra money while decluttering your room. Even if your parents want in on the action you can probably work a split with them that will make both of you happy. Here are some general ideas to help you get started.

Kids Items You Can Sell

Clothes, toys and videos are good money makers on eBay.

Go to eBay and look up a “lot” of size six girl’s cloths. You will find they are expensive! The average price for a lot of 20 good conditioned clothes is about $35.00.

When you grow out of your seasonal clothes do not throw them out. Bundle them into different lots by category. For example bundle girls dresses separate from girls play clothes, but only do that if you have at least six of each different type.

Lots of any item sell better than single items unless the item is unique or high priced. For example, a hand embroidered dress that you paid a lot for would sell better by itself instead of bundled with other basic dresses.

The next item to look up on eBay is toys. Most toys in good condition will sell for a lot of money. One idea that works well is to buy hot items in October at Wal-Mart or Toys-R-Us and sell them on eBay. Busy people are willing to pay extra for the convenience of getting the items delivered to their home. For example, when the Mega Power Ranger came out it sold at Wal-Mart for about $45.00. The same item sold on eBay for up to $65.00 plus shipping. The Yellow Power Ranger is yet another example where the store price was about $6.00, while the same item was selling on eBay for about $20.00.

If you receive duplicate birthday or Christmas presents that you are unable to exchange you can sell those on eBay also. Look at the eBay listings for items of interest to see if selling on eBay is worth more than returning the item to the store.

Kid’s videos and DVDs are also good money-makers. Bundle about three of these together, and you can usually make about $7.00-$12.00 per bundle. Bundle more and the money goes up. Disney movies in hard cases can go for a higher amount. This also works for other types of movies as well.

Save those McDonalds toys. Some Kids Meals toys sell high. Take the new Star Wars toys from Burger King…very collectible. You will find them selling on eBay from $1.00 to $5.00, not including shipping.

Ebay has a whole section devoted to dolls and bears. If you tire of your collectible dolls or train set  sell them on eBay.

Kids Crafts You Can Sell

Around the holidays, especially, children can place their hand in paint and make a print on some quality paper. Add a holiday related poem and you have a great craft to sell on eBay.

Make gift jars with ready made mixes. For example, hot chocolate mixes in a jar with a plastic spoon tied to it with a ribbon. Dip the end of the spoon with white chocolate.

Baby Items You Can Sell

Used baby items are very profitable. Baby items cost a lot of money, especially in their first year. Any “gently” used items are generally good sellers on eBay.

If you have baby coupons that you will never use, sell them on eBay! Left over diapers and formula sell well also. A lot of 35 used cloth diapers usually sells for around $38.00 plus shipping. Four Fuzzi Bunz diapers (cloth diapers with hemp inserts) can sell for as much as $40.00.

There you have it. Plenty of ideas for selling those leftover kids items on eBay…and you can pick up some great spending money while doing it.

Start a Worm Farm For Fun and Profit

Are you looking for kids jobs? Do you live in an area where people use worms for fishing? Raising and selling worms might be a perfect way for kids and teens to pick up that extra money! It cost you little to nothing to get started. It is environmentally helpful and will not require a lot of your time. Check it out and see what you think.

A typical household’s waste is around 40% organic matter. Things like fruit and vegetable scraps, food scraps, tea bags and coffee grounds. All this can be recycled by worms and turned into beautiful, rich, chemical-free compost which you can use in your garden or around your potted plants. Keeping this organic matter out of landfills would not only reduce the volume of rubbish sent to landfills but also reduce methane, a greenhouse gas which contributes to global warming.

Once you’ve finished the initial set up of your worm farm it’s just a matter of collecting your organic matter in a separate container and dumping it in the worm farm instead of the rubbish bin. You’ll be helping the environment and in exchange getting a valuable product that your plants will thrive on. And aside from the one-time set up and occasional harvesting, the worms do most of the work.

How a worm farm works

* The worm farm is housed in a bin, or more exactly, a series of stackable bins lids. You can make your own from a variety of materials or buy a ready-made kit, usually made of plastic, which often come complete with worms. The worms start off at the bottom unit. As organic waste gets added the worms eat their way up through the bins, leaving worm droppings, also known as ‘vermicast’ behind them. The vermicast is a very rich, top quality compost that can be used in your garden or potted plants.

* At the bottom is a collector tray. The second by-product of this process is a liquid, which is sometimes called ‘worm tea’ or ‘worm wee’. This liquid makes a fabulous liquid plant food when diluted with water in a ratio of 1:10 (1 part liquid, 10 parts water). The worm farm kits usually have a spigot on the collector tray to make it easy to drain off the worm wee.

* You add organic waste. You add organic waste in the form of kitchen scraps, leaves, grass clippings, shredded paper. As the worms eat half their bodyweight a day, turning their food into compost, the layer of compost beneath them builds up and they literally eat their way up through the bins.

* When the worm farm is almost full, harvest the vermicast. When the bottom unit has filled and all of the worms have moved up into the units above, you remove the bottom bin, and the next bin up now becomes the bottom bin. You can use the compost to as a natural fertilizer, top-dressing or mulch in your garden or containers.

What composting worms like
* Dark, moist (but not wet) living conditions.
* Constant temperature range. Position the worm farm to avoid direct sun for any length of time, or high temperatures. If you live somewhere with cold winters use an insulation jacket over the bins in the winter.
* Good air circulation. Take care to not overfill the bins with waste material.
* A mix of dry and wet waste. If your fruit and vegetable scraps are too wet, mix in some dry material such as shredded paper or egg cartons, or toilet roll cores, dust from sweeping or the vacuum cleaner, hair clippings.

What composting worms don’t like
* Too much water. If their environment is getting too waterlogged make sure you drain off the liquid at the bottom and add more dry material like shredded paper and egg cartons or cardboard.
* Too much acidity. Some foods, like onions, garlic, lemons make the environment too acid, so go light on those foods.
* Too much waste material above them. Even though the worms can burrow underground they still need air. If you have too much waste above them, especially if it’s getting damp and packed in, it can cut off their air supply and the worm farm will start smelling bad. If you have large scraps like lettuce or cabbage leaves chop them up and mix with shredded egg cartons or cardboard to keep the waste light with lots of air spaces. If you have more waste than the worms can keep up with you can put the excess in plastic bags and freeze it. Then defrost and use it when the worms need more food.

What can be composted?
* Food scraps (except meat, fat and dairy products)
* Grass clippings (in moderation, too much can clump together and cut off the air circulation)
* Leaves
* Seaweed
* Farm animal manure
* Untreated sawdust and shavings
* Vacuum cleaner dust and floor sweepings
* Hair clippings
* Shredded paper and cardboard (avoid glossy paper such as that found in magazines)

As long as you provide the right conditions, regularly feed them and drain off the liquid, your worms will continue eating, breeding and providing you with the best natural fertilizer for your garden and plants. So kids, why not start a garden too and sell your vegetables to friends and neighbors?

Does Your Job Search Include Careers With Video Games?

Many kids, teens and adults too love video games. There is certainly nothing wrong with searching for a career that includes games or other activities we love. As you begin embarking on your pursuits for higher education, what majors have you considered? Business? Accounting? Computers? Or how about more complex fields such as law or medicine which require additional years of schooling?

Well, if you have a passion for these things then you should go where your heart leads you. But if you’re taking these types of majors simply because it seems like the right thing to do, perhaps you should consider a different course of action: majoring in something you TRULY enjoy… something you could do hours on end without feeling like you are working at all. And if you are like many people, this ‘something’ would be playing video games.

That’s right! You can actually get a job creating and/or playing video games. Below is a list of some of the careers available for those with a video game degree.

1) Video Game Tester

This is a position in which you truly would get paid for playing video games. According to Doug Doine, a game tester for Electronic Arts, as a game tester you would “go over different components of a game and look for things that just don’t make sense.” You would also “break the game,” meaning you would “do things a normal user would do and inadvertently see something go wrong.”

Doug Doine further adds that video game testing is a good place to start for young people who want to “break into the industry.” To get such a position in it is best to have a “passion for gaming” and some educational background. Doug himself has a degree.

2) Programmer

According to Gameinformer Magazine, video game programmers are the “heart and soul” of the industry. They are the ones responsible for creating the code necessary for getting video games to function. And contrary to popular belief, their jobs aren’t always easy. Video game programming often involves creating complex functions and algorithms often times more challenging than programs created in Corporate America. Thus a talent for mathematics along with a more analytically-inclined brain are absolute essentials.

Indeed, game programming may not be the appropriate course for everyone seeking a video game career, but if you were deciding to go into the computer field anyway, which job would be more enjoyable… coding the next Halo, or working on a boring, hum-drum piece of no-name software?

3) Animator

Animators are responsible for coordinating the movement of video game characters. Accomplishing requires more than drawing something on a piece of paper, which according to Alex Drouin, an established game animator, occurs after a lot of “brainstorming, chilling, playing, planning and testing” with the programmer. But when the busy work is done, the video game animator will finally get a chance to do what he or she does best… animate. Alex Drouin says the thing he liked best about his job was “being able to come |there| late in the morning, sit behind |his| computer, put on a great CD, and then create crazy animation that will end up in a game that will be seen all around the world by gamers.” Now, wouldn’t it be nice if you could get a job like that? With a video game degree it is certainly possible!

4) Sound Designer

Sound designers are responsible for creating the music and sound effects of video games. Video game music is created either from digital sources or real-life orchestration. As video game consoles become more advanced, many sound designers favor the latter when deciding on what type of music they want in the games they are working on. Creating appropriate sound effects, on the other hand, sometimes requires more creative experimentation.

To be successful at video game sound designing it is best to: 1) have an interest in both music and sound, 2) possess knowledge of recording technology and 3) be familiar with the types of music and sound used in today’s most popular video games. A video game degree will help develop these talents and skills.

5) According to Gameinformer Magazine, a producer “functions as the glue that holds a development team together, seeing to a variety of organizational tasks ranging from budgeting and planning to input on the direction of the game itself.”

A good producer must possess superior management and accounting skills. This is because not only does a producer have to work with people on a regular basis trying to get them to meet deadlines, but they are also responsible for the budget of the video game project. Not knowing how to best spend money, (a skill acquired through accounting and economics), could result in financial failure.

Indeed, producers have a lot on their shoulders, but it is still a suitable option for non-technical persons who desire to get into the game industry.

6) Game Designer

Video game designers are responsible for creating the ‘experience’ of a particular game. Evan Wells, a video game designer, sums it up by saying “the main tasks of the designer is to make sure the game is fun.”

Wells further adds that game designers are responsible for macro and micro level design. Macro level design involves “figuring out the core mechanics of the game; the variety of level looks, power-ups, etc.” Micro-design involves creating the “actual levels and the moment-to-moment gameplay within those levels… the enemies, the objects, and the particular way you encounter those enemies and objects.”

Good game designers should obviously have an interest in video games along with some drawing and programming skills.

7) PR Manager

If you would like to explore the marketing side of the video game industry, then consider becoming a PR manager. PR managers are responsible for promoting video games. And according to Natalie Salmon, a PR manager for Midway, part of this process involves “learning about the game that is going to be announced.” So this boils down at some point having to play the video game. Isn’t that what you wanted to do anyway?

8) Fields not relating to video games

Each of the career paths discussed above are fields that are not limited to the video game industry. If you decide that you don’t want to use your video game degree to find a job related to video games, you can always use it to market yourself for other types of jobs. Of course, you may want to take a class or two to get a certification to help further establish yourself in the latest technology, but this is recommended for anyone pursuing an IT career. Bottom line, a video game degree, (just like any other computer-related degree), WILL lay the foundation you need to teach you the basics for programming, testing, animation, software development and other skills that are pertinent to the business world.

Pet Setting an Interesting Job

As teens, tweens, kids and young adults finding ways to make money can often present quite a challenge.  Youth are faced with many challenges from their school and activity schedules to lack of employment and transportation in their area to the child labor laws of the community, state and federal government. Pet sitting f or friends, relatives and neighbors after school, weekends or during vacation breaks provides what can be a fun and rewarding money making idea.

Pet setting isn’t just about making money though money may be your end goal.  In order to be a good pet sitter, you also need to have a good understanding of what types of situations you can handle regarding the care of someones pet, and those that you cannot. With this understanding the end result will than be rewarded as kids make money!

There are a variety of ways that pet sitters will care for someones pet. Sometimes they will visit a few times a day, staying about 30 minutes while they care for the pets basic needs. Other pet sitters will stay overnight or perhaps you will take care of the pet in your own home.

Regardless of how the pets are cared for, it’s important to be aware that pet sitting does not always go as well as planned. Before you even accept a pet sitting job you will want to have the permission of your parents just as you would with any other jobs. If your parents do not know the people or the pets well they will probably want to meet them before you even take on the job.

Most people may think it’s easy to be a pet sitter. After all, the only thing you have to do is make sure the dog or cat or other pets have fresh water and receive their daily food allotment and if needed take them outside to relieve themselves a few times during the day.

Yes, it’s true, the life of the pet sitter does seem rather easy. Yet, there are situations that a pet sitter needs to be aware of that could actually become very dangerous.

Sometimes having to care for dogs, especially outside dogs, can become very dangerous because outside dogs can be very territorial. Most owners know their dogs well enough to know whether there is any danger for the person who may need to come into their home to take care of their pets when there away.

This is not where the problem is. The real problem comes in when the pet sitter is required to take care of the dogs by entering their yard to provide them with food and water. This is where the pet sitter needs to have extra caution. Before accepting a job where you must deal with outside dogs, you need to make sure they are well behaved and well socialized.

If there is more than one dog, and you enter their yard, the situation could become very dangerous. If you become fearful and the dogs sense that you don’t belong there, they could see you as a threat and even decide to attack.

Trying to cope with a nervous dog, or worse, several nervous dogs can become a pretty scary situation.

Always stress to the owners that it is important for them to be honest with you and tell you how well socialized their dogs are. You may want to ask if any of their dogs have any tendency to be aggressive. Do they jump up on people? Do they get nervous when someone enters the yard? Do they have any problem with strangers coming into their territory?

With some of the larger breeds, you may want to have a test run when the owner is hidden away from the house, yet close enough to help out if needed. You can test to see how the dogs will react when you enter their territory while they think the owner is away.

Before you enter the yard, you need to take note of how the dogs behave. Do they seem nervous or anxious? Or are they thrilled to have a visitor? If your gut tells you it’s not safe, you should not to accept that job.

It’s better to be safe than sorry. Pet sitters really need to understand that it’s not always a good idea to take every job. Before taking on any pet sitting job, make sure you meet with both the pets and the owners. Ask questions about how well the dogs behave, what types of problems the owner may have or have had in the past.

This is not only the time for the pet owners to interview you, it’s your time to interview them as well. Never accept a pet sitting job if you do not feel comfortable with the pets or the owners.

Most times pet sitting is truly a great job to have. Just remember that all jobs are not for all pet sitters. Sometimes it’s best to say no.
